Samoan volleyball sensation Futi Tavana was named MVP of the BYU Pre-Season Tournament last weekend. The Cougars overwhelmed perrenial volleyball powerhouse UCI-Irvine in the final. The 6-8 freshman and Kauai High School alum was consistent throughout the tournament, coming up with key blocks and kills to lead his team into the finals.

Futi is the son of Dr. Gaugau and Palagi Tavana and was recruited to play basketball and volleyball but chose the latter to play for the Cougars.

Awesome for us volleyball fans to see a Polynesian playing at this level. I remember a lot of buzz about this player in his prep days.
